Joan Kurland has been teaching piano and voice for 22 years.  A child prodigy on the piano, Joan began her studies at the age of 5 and received her classical training at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music and the Oberlin Conservatory.  Unlike many classically-trained pianists, Joan is also an accomplished pop musician.  She spent seven years playing electronic keyboards and singing in a highly successful Top-40 band, played piano at Nordstrom Department Stores, and currently performs as a pianist, singer, and songwriter at parties, weddings, and religious services.

Joan's love for and familiarity with many types of music (classics, pop, show tunes, rock) makes her an ideal teacher for today's students, most of whom want to learn a variety of music.  Her friendly, warm, and enthusiastic demeanor helps to create a safe space for anyone who wants to learn to play the piano or to sing.  She welcomes all ages, from kindergartners to senior citizens, and tailors her approach to the unique needs of each student.

JOAN'S TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:  "After 22 years of teaching, I've learned that no two people learn the same way.  Some students, for instance, are primarily visual, and are most comfortable learning through what's in front of them on the page.  Others are more auditory and absolutely need to hear the music first.  The key to making a student feel happy and fulfilled is to cultivate their strengths while shoring up their weak points.  Also, I'm a firm believer in having students learn and play pieces they really like.  There's enough good music in the world that no one should have to suffer through music they don't enjoy.  A certain amount of discipline and delayed gratification is necessary when one is learning a new skill, but music lessons should be fun!"
